‘A Modern Day Monk’ Short Documentary

A modern day monk

A Modern Day Monk is a short documentary that tells a realistic story about Sam Park who is doing van life.

I hear him sharing his personal stories, speaking passionately about the life in the van, and lessons that he learned. I spent three days with Sam, to show his life in a realistic way. I captured his life as a modern day monk.

I worked as a cinematographer for this feature segment. After getting inspired by a well-shot documentary before I got to film this project, I focused more on getting better interview & b-roll shots. I studied by watching and analyzing documentary films and tried to use the knowledge that I learned. It took about 10-15 min to create an interview shot that looked good by caring about the background and the lighting conditions. Even though we had to spend lots of time trying various locations, it was worth it. I was really satisfied with how the shots looked in the final video that our group created.

Since our group usually made more story-based projects for the show, it was quite a new experience for our group to create an artist spotlight film that is more based on the cinematography aspect. I learned a lot about how important location scouting is by creating this project. Even though it would take a lot of time for you to find a location for the film, it makes the viewers fall into the video easily by filming in a location that matches the storyline. Our main subject was a guitarist and we had to find a location that matches a musician. By spending time finding locations, we eventually found a carousel that was well lit with colorful lights. I was able to create a very cinematic scene of the musician playing the guitar at night with the background of a carousel going around which is creating a more moody vibe to the scene.

Anchor Intro for Portola News Network

anchor intro

I worked as a cinematographer for the PNN anchor intro. Since it was my first time working on a project as a group, I learned a lot about communication and pre-production skills. By having a phone call with the director Cece before the shoot, we were able to figure out the location and the shot list. It made our filming process way easier since we already knew what we were supposed to do. It was a great experience to recognize the importance of pre-production.

By creating each interview shot for both of our main characters for the feature story, I was able to improve my communication skills with the interviewee and also with our teammates. Since I need to try our various shots to get the perfect framing, I had to communicate well with the interviewee. Being able to communicate better with them, makes it possible to get the best shot out of it by sharing opinions and getting feedback to achieve the best thing possible at the moment.
